Geography
Geography plays a crucial role in understanding our world. At St Catherine’s College we aim to ensure that our curriculum makes a vital contribution to the students’ knowledge of the rapidly changing environmental and social challenges facing us and how we should tackle them.
Human geography concerns the understanding of the dynamics of cultures, societies and economies, and physical geography concerns the understanding of the dynamics of landscapes and the environment.
Geography puts this understanding of social and physical processes within the context of place – by studying country units in years 7 and 8 we are helping students to recognise the great differences in cultures, political systems, economies, landscapes and environments across the world, and explore the links between them. Understanding the causes of differences and inequalities between places and social groups underlie much of the newer developments in human geography which are then studied in more detail at year 9 and throughout GCSE.
Geography is, in the broadest sense, an education for life and for living. The Geography Curriculum at St Catherine’s helps the students to be more socially and environmentally sensitive, better informed, and more responsible as citizens and employees.
